What does a typical placement look like?

General administrative duties:

  • Filing and photocopying.
  • Take minutes at team meetings.
  • Manage calendar and organise meetings for Site Leads.
  • Update data on team performance board.

Improve IT skills:

  • Up skill on Microsoft Office Packages and Google Drive with access to learning modules.
  • Produce/update Excel spread sheets and manage Outlook mailbox.

Networking skills:

  • Shadow different teams within the business area/department to gain an understanding of the different roles within HMRC.

Competency writing and interview skills:

  • Write powerful competency statements for Civil Service job applications using access to Civil Service Learning material and support from mentor.
  • Take part in a mock interview as well as receive feedback to develop skills for potential future interviews.

What you should wear:

  • Comfortable, smart casual clothing is best. For example, trousers and a top, chinos and a shirt, a dress, or a skirt and top. Don’t worry if you have a limited wardrobe – we don’t judge.

Basic IT skills – Opportunity to up skill in Microsoft Office packages such as Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Reviewing and updating various spread sheets/workbooks to enable collation of data to deadlines. Potential opportunities to review and update guidance/spread sheets.

Administrative experience – Filing, printing & photocopying.

Assisting colleagues across the business unit as required.

Networking skills – Opportunity to shadow different teams within the business area to gain an understanding of the different roles within HMRC.

Observing and learning work processes, understanding where their work fits in with “the bigger picture”

Understanding of business aims and how we achieve them (tools we use/ where to find information)

We will ask you to undertake tasks, such as attending meetings, note taking, preparing short reports and maintaining / analysing visual data.  These are all skills that will equip you for life after the placement and that will also help support us in providing the best service we can to the public.  Skills such as CV writing are also really important in getting you into work; we want to help with this as well as helping you understand the kinds of qualities that we look for in people when we are recruiting.

What you should wear:

  • Comfortable, smart casual clothing is best. For example, trousers and a top, chinos and a shirt, a dress, or a skirt and top. Don’t worry if you have a limited wardrobe – we don’t judge.

  • Interview techniques and making a good impact at interview
  • CV skills.

DWP Work Placement – 2 Weeks – Benton Park View (Newcastle) – 05/11/2018

The Department for Work and Pensions is the largest government department in the United Kingdom, and is responsible for welfare and pension policy.

DWP’s work experience programme is intended to support young people aged 18-30 years old, who are facing difficulty getting into work. The programme is designed to help you develop your confidence and learn new and valuable skills, and give you real, on-the-job experience of working in the Civil Service.

What does a typical placement look like?

We will help you gain greater self-confidence, and improve your organisational, communications and team working/collaboration skills – key skills that employers are looking for. We will also help you with your interview skills and CV writing. The work experience includes a personal learning journey that develops you as a leader and helps you with your wellbeing and resilience.

The Project Delivery Profession Capability Team within the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are offering a two week Movement to Work programme. This Programme will provide you with a general insight into working within a large Civil Service Department.

During your work experience you will get to know what type of work the Project Delivery Profession Capability Team undertake. You may get this by carrying out the following tasks:

asking others what they do and how that fits in with the bigger picture,  by reading appropriate information undertake a variety of learning and development. This learning and development may cover:

  • communication skills,
  • formal and informal speaking,
  • presentation skills,
  • team working,
  • having a mock interview
  • wellbeing session(s)
  • complete a Participant’s Handbook, complete a learning diary
  • attend meetings with your line manager and/or colleagues as appropriate
  • job shadow a member of staff
  • undertake work as agreed with your line manager
  • receive feedback from your line manager during and upon completion of your work experience
